The Algebra of Geometry: Cartesian, Projective and Areal co-ordinates
|
Description
This book explores the natural co-ordinate systems for studying plane geometry swiftly but meticulously. It goes on to explore advanced geometry from an algebraic viewpoint. The intention is not to replace Euclidean methods, but to supplement them. Bradley includes both original mathematical results, and unsolved conjectures which the reader is invited to prove.
Euclidean methods are hampered by many factors; the need to dream up ingenious constructions is one, and the persistent problem of diagram dependency (all the features of a particular geometrical configuration may not be captured by a particular diagram) is another. Algebra enables one to overcome both these problems. Serious geometers using algebraic methods will probably want access both to geometry software and to a computer algebra system (except when they are actually competing in a mathematics competition!).
Christopher J. Bradley has been involved in the training of the UK Mathematical Olympiad team for many years. He was once a fellow of Jesus College, Oxford and a master at Clifton College, Bristol. He is the author of mathematics texts published by both Oxford University Press and the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust. He is a reknowned problem solver, and for many years was a regular contributer to Crux Mathematicorum.
Some of his recent research in geometry can be found at the open access free internet journal Forum Geometricorum.

Surface mail
This is a very heavy book, and substantial savings can be made by having it delivered `surface mail' if you live outside (the Royal Mail definition of) Europe. However, in such circumstances, be aware that there may be a significant delay before the book arrives. It is your choice.
